On Friday 15th August, President Donald Trump met with President Vladimir Putin in Alaska under the banner “Pursuing Peace” – a summit named “The Alaska Summit”.
Whilst this could be seen as a victory for Putin, as he has been shunned by most Western nations since the start of the Ukraine war, it is a massive step for the war in Ukraine. A massive step for the people of Ukraine and the people of Europe.
Whether you approve or disapprove of President Trump, one thing is for sure – he gets things done.
Something had to change to end this war. Bringing Putin to the table is a major change.
No ceasefire was agreed and in fact an invitation for Trump to go to Moscow.
We can only hope something significant might have been discussed and privately agreed upon.
Of course there was significant part not involved, Ukraine itself.
One major thing that has made it out into the headlines is the potential for Ukraine to agree to give some of the occupied territory to Russia. Whilst there might be concessions during an agreement, passing on sovereign territory should never be part of an agreement to an aggressor. If that goes, what’s next? Countries will push boundaries more and more.
It’s the saying – If Russia stopped fighting, the war would end. If Ukraine stop fighting, Ukraine would end.
Whilst I write this, President Zelensky and European Leaders are in the White House meeting President Trump. It will be interesting to hear what comes out of that meeting.
Perhaps just perhaps, this is another step towards peace.
