Lucy Powell – Deputy Labour Leader

Lucy Powell has been elected as the new Deputy Labour leader.

Lucy Powell won the race with 87,407 votes against Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, who took 73,536 votes.

The MP, representing Manchester Central, said that the party needed to be “bolder” and promised to be a “champion for our Labour Values”.

She made it clear that the party could not win support by “trying to ‘Out-Reform’ Reform” and acknowledged that that party “must change how we are doing things to turn things around”.

My take on it – I am very happy that Lucy Powell has become the deputy leader. I actually voted for her.

Bridget Phillipson is a great Labour MP and Education Secretary, but I just feel like Lucy Powell was what the party needed.

Someone outside of the government that can take time to represent the views of the party.

She wants to be bold and knows that the government needs to change. She won’t just follow the party line led by the Prime Minister, she will debate when she needs to.

The party is in good hands and I hope Sir Keir Starmer will listen to her.
