Labour Needs To Change

Yesterday I contacted the Labour Party to cancel my membership.

There are many things that I agree with the party on – I like the continuous movement towards a public owned railway service and, as it’s clear, they are acting on the issues in the NHS.

But the hope that they stood on, to clear the Tories out, has gone.

I have been struggling with the direction of the party. It felt like they were clear when they were in opposition, but since they’ve got in power it seems like they change their minds and don’t have a clear vision. They are taking money from people that have no other choice. They are taking more money from me, with no benefit for me coming from it. So I’ve taken my money from the party.

Whatever party got into power at the last election they would have had to deal with a big mess. This mess has really carried on since 2008. This country has never truly recovered.

That is where I thought Labour was going to fill in the gap. Fill in the gap with hope.

But you can’t tax your way to growth.

That doesn’t mean you need to cut taxes, but allow people to keep more of their money. When people have money and they feel confident, they spend it in the economy. It gets the economy moving.

It actually was a Labour argument to say the more money working people in this country keeps, the more that is spent in the economy and stays in the economy. They have betrayed the workers of this country.

My fear is, if the economy doesn’t bounce the way they want it to, how much more are they going to take.

I would have love to see the government also listen to the farmers. I agree that the inheritance tax rules needed to change, but they should listen carefully to the farmers and change it. I would like to see the value at which they start paying it raised higher – so family farmers are protected. But not just that, let’s make it so working family farms are properly protected and that people who buy land just for the tax incentive are hit by it. Let’s take the value of the farm machinery and livestock out of the value. Let’s make it easier for the actual working farms.

At the next elections I will have to really consider who to vote for.

I definitely don’t want to vote for Reform, I want to keep them out (but I don’t really want to vote Tory). The Greens are too extreme one way for me – I don’t like the leader. I’m definitely somewhere around the Labour Party and the Lib Dems.

I would love to see Andy Burnham as leader of the Labour Party and get the hope back in the party and in the country.

But for now, Labour needs to change before it completely loses my support. Give people it’s money.
